Session 4

  • What are the shadow-things, and whose is the young woman’s face one of them wears?
  • Is Menkaph summoning the shadows, or is something else aboard responsible?
  • What does Menkaph really want? What are her motives?
  • Whose was the muffled scream from the compartment, and is anyone dead?
  • Who are the young American couple, and what hold does Menkaph have over the wife?
  • Who is the Russian nobleman and his young wife, and are they connected to any of this?
  • What is the Scottish reporter writing, and why is she on this train?
  • Where is the Whispering Veil tome? Burnham never saw Menkaph carry a book.
  • Now that light and fire hurt the shadows but bullets do not, how do the unarmed scholars defend themselves?

Session 3

  • How much of what Bentley Burnham told us is true? (Aboard the train he fumbled his Fast Talk and gave up everything; the party judged him truthful but ignorant of much. Session 4)
  • What exactly is Menkaph paying Burnham to find out, and what has he already reported about us? (To learn who the party is and to locate Georgie; he passed on their identities and descriptions, so Menkaph now knows they are aboard. Session 4)
  • Who is Baroness von Hoffler, and why does an Austrian occult collector want this expedition paid for?
  • Where did the veiled woman the urchins saw in Shoreditch go, heading south?
  • Can the Arrest Veil Decline spell be tested safely before someone has only four days to live?
  • Is Captain Barrington a help, a liability, or a plant? (He drew his sabre against the shadows and stood with the party, clumsy but on their side. Leans help; loyalties still not fully tested. Session 4)

Session 2

  • Are Mrs. Leeds and Menkaph the same person? (Stronger now: Burnham confirms Menkaph hired him to watch us, and a veiled woman called on him in Shoreditch the same day. Session 3)
  • What is at the Shoreditch address? (A watcher: blackmailer/information agent Bentley Burnham, hired by Menkaph to surveil the party and Dr. Smith. Session 3)
  • Can Demir actually destroy an artefact described as indestructible? Is this a trap?
  • What is the connection between the Prince’s Islands and the Blood Red Veil?
  • Who is Selima Makryat and is she connected to Menkaph?
  • Is there a copy of The Whispering Veil anywhere in London?
  • What was the cult doing at the veil collector’s house beyond stealing the book? Why kill him?

Session 1

  • Who is Mrs. Leeds? Tall, fine bonnet with veil, well dressed, an accent from somewhere “up north.” Cult leader? Something worse?
  • Was the woman who clocked Georgie at the corner Leeds herself? She knows his face now either way
  • What language is on the foreign papers Georgie picked up? What kind of tickets? (Ferry tickets from Constantinople to Prince’s Islands, December 1892. Session 2)
  • What is at the Shoreditch address from the notepad impression? (Blackmailer Bentley Burnham, hired by Menkaph to watch the party. Session 3)
  • The veil cannot be burned. So how is it destroyed? Can it be?
  • What cult or tradition uses pre-Christian hieroglyph-like script and these two phrases?
  • Where does Demir fit in? (Pook’s professor, old colleague of Smith’s, tracking Menkaph from Constantinople. Session 2)
  • How did Pook end up in that room? Did she go willingly with Leeds, or was she taken? (Pook stole the veil from Menkaph, was caught, brought to Durward Street by Leeds. Session 2)
  • The whispers. What language? Whose voice?

Session 0

  • Where is Smith now? (At her house in St John’s Wood writing condolence letter to Pook’s parents. Session 2)
  • Who is Maria? Just a student, or something more? (Maria Pook, Demir’s student. Volunteered to follow Menkaph, stole the veil, died wearing it. Session 1-2)
  • Was the messenger who delivered Smith’s note the same one who delivered the calling cards two hours later?
  • Who signed the card? The handwriting may or may not be Smith’s
  • Why Whitechapel, and why Durward Street specifically? Is the Ripper site a signal, a coincidence, or staging?
  • What was in the original note Smith received during Auld Lang Syne?
  • Did the butler get a useful look at the runner who brought the calling cards? Could they describe the messenger, or recognize him again?
